ALEXANDRIA, Va. - In a vote of the conference coaches, two Drexel women's basketball players earned All-CAA recognition for their outstanding performances throughout the regular season. Kamile Nacickaite was named to the league's First Team, while Hollie Mershon grabbed a spot on the second team. The awards were announced at a banquet held at the Westin Hotel in Old Towne, Alexandria in advance of this weekend's Virginia 529 CAA Tournament.
Nacickaite, who shared the league's final Player of the Week award with CAA Player of the Year Elena Delle Donne, led the Dragons and finished fifth in the league, scoring 17.2 points per game. She was the leading scorer or tied for the scoring lead in 17 of the Dragons' 28 games during the regular season, and also led the team by pulling down 5.5 rebounds a contest. One of the most reliable shooters in the conference, Nacickaite finished third in the league from the free throw line with an .808 percentage and ninth in three-point percentage.
The senior from Siauliai, Lithuania concluded her final regular season in the blue and gold as the program's fourth-leading scorer, with a chance to move into third place with a big postseason. She currently sits at 1,574 points, just 77 points behind Katrina Martin (1,651 from 2000-05) for third all-time at Drexel. Nacickaite is also among the program leaders for field goals, three-pointers and points per game, and currently sports the highest three-point percentage (.389) in the history of Drexel women's basketball.
Nacickaite was a Second Team All-CAA selection a year ago, and came into the year as a Preseason First Team All-CAA choice.
For Mershon, her selection as a Second Team All-CAA performer marked the first postseason conference award of her career. She finished second to Nacickaite in points per game (14.8) and rebounds (5.3) on the team, putting together a breakout season that saw her set or tie new career highs for points three times. Most recently, Mershon dropped 27 points at James Madison as the Dragons defeated the Dukes in Harrisonburg for the first time in program history.
Mershon also ranks among the league's top-10 scorers, currently sitting eighth in the league. She also is ninth in the conference - and first on the Dragons - with 3.5 assists per game. Mershon is fifth in three-point percentage in the CAA at .350, and seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.2.
A junior from Malvern, Pa., Mershon has already joined Nacickaite amongst the program's all-time leaders in several categories. She is sixth with 105 career three-pointers, and second only to Nacickaite with a .370 percentage from long range.
In addition to the awards for Nacickaite and Mershon, Drexel saw six of its student-athletes named to the CAA All-Academic squad. Marisa Crane, a senior point guard who has recovered from a knee injury that ended her junior season after just 11 games, has started all but three games for the Dragons this season and sports an impressive 2.1 assist-to-turnover ratio. She was named a Second Team All-Academic performer. Fiona Flanagan, Renee Johnson-Allen, Abby Redick, Tory Thierolf and Taylor Wootton were each selected to the Honorable Mention All-Academic roster.
Drexel will open play at the CAA Tournament as the league's third seed. They will play the winner of #6 VCU vs. #11 William & Mary on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md. Drexel went 4-0 against those two squads during the regular season.
