
Varsity Eight Boats Make History at the 2012 Bergen and Kelly Cup

Philadelphia – For the first time in 50 years, the Drexel men's and women's varsity eight boats both won the Bergen and Kelly Cup titles. The men's team placed first in four out of five races on the day, while the women won two of five events.
The men's varsity eight boat won the Bergen Cup for the second straight year crossing the finish line at 6:04.0 ahead of city-rival Temple. The Owls clocked in at 6:09.2 followed by La Salle, Saint Joseph's and Villanova. The newly named Lois Krall boat featured coxswain Randall Lee, stroke Kurt Linton, Paul Wisniowski, Aleksandar Radovic, Lorenzo Albala, Sebastian Ryan, Vanja Busic, Michael Faust and bow Will Masters.
The men's second varsity eight captured first place with a time of 6:11.5. The Temple Owls stopped the clock second with a time of 6:13.8 followed by Saint Joseph's. Marc Smith coxed the Annette Pennoni boat along with stroke John Pieper, Marcus DeMarici, Martin Khait, Brian Timlin, Kevin Rorabaugh, Ryan Mallgrave, Timothy Drake and bow Patrick McGann.
Pete Eyrich and Adam Cordi won the men's pair race with a time of 7:33.9. The Dragons finished before La Salle, Philly U and Villanova.
The men's freshmen eight, in the Vince Vidas boat, posted a top-time of 6:15.0 against the La Salle Explorers. The winning boat included coxswain Victoria Kenion, stroke Dean Hill, Brian McCabe, Hartman Byers, Cameron Staines, James Byrne, Jake Murphy, Grigorios Papadourakis and bow Christian Ladd.
For the women, the varsity eight boat won the Kelly Cup finishing with a time of 6:56.1. Saint Joseph's finished second with a time of 7:00.5 followed by Temple, La Salle and Villanova.Alex Paulin coxed the Marlene Buckley II boat along with stroke Julia Jackson, Elizabeth Daugherty, Mollie Cusack, Samantha Cowan, Elizabeth Bratton, Emily Coyle, Sierra Baca and bow Alexa Antoniloi.
The women's second varsity eight boat recorded first place with a time of 6:56.9 ahead of Saint Joseph's. The Owls clocked in at 6:57.6 followed by Temple and La Salle. The newly named Maria Papadakis boat featured coxswain Kerry Walsh, Jackie Bender, Elizabeth Campanella, Juliana DeMarici, Mallory Sykes, Amanda O'Malley, Alyssa Leahy, Asiya Mahmud and bow Colleen Delaney. Drexel also won the Kelly Cup in 2009 and 2010.
Following the Bergen and Kelly Cup, Drexel Crew hosted a boat dedication ceremony at the Bachelors Barge Club located on the Schuylkill River to celebrate the newly named "The Lois Krall", "The Maria Papadakis", "The Julia Grace", "The Phoebe Jay Fry" and “The Marlena Elizabeth Buckley” boats.
