Box Score
Waipahu, Oahu – Drexel's offense exploded for four goals in the first half and defeated Hawai'i Hilo, 4-0, at Waipio Stadium. The Dragons extended their unbeaten streak to five matches and are now 4-1-1 this season. It was the season-opener for the Vulcans (0-1).
The Dragons jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead for the second game in a row. Sam Greenfield started the scoring early, in the game's eighth minute. Caitlin Gottier set up the goal with a perfect pass which put Greenfield in alone in the middle of the box. She beat the Vulcans' keeper who really had no chance due to Gottier's feed.
The lead increased to 2-0 just 11 minutes later. Once again, good ball movement led to the goal. This time, senior Jess Lowinger, who was just over midfield, lobbed the ball over the defense on the right. Freshman Lauren Stollar used her speed to track down the ball, racing by a Vulcan defender. The Honolulu native broke in alone on the right and scored her second goal of the season.
Late in the first half, Drexel put the game out of reach. The Dragons were applying repeated pressure on the Vulcans' defense. Freshman Gabby Dixon was taken down in the box as she was about to fire a shot. Dixon was awarded a penalty kick, and deposited a shot into the far left corner, making it a 3-0 match. Junior Andy Stampone closed out the first-half scoring with just 1:57 to play, putting the Dragons up 4-0. Abby Toner was credited with her first career assist on the play.
Eve Badana played the first 52 minutes in goal for Drexel and made a save on the only shot on goal she faced in the first half. Kelsie Fye made her collegiate debut and played the final 38 minutes and made a save.
The Dragons will enjoy their final night in Honolulu this evening. The team will fly back home on Monday evening. Drexel will be off until Sunday, when Penn comes to Vidas Field.
