Box Score
Philadelphia – Melissa Chapman scored a goal off a corner kick late in the second half as Drexel tied George Mason, 1-1, in the conference opener for both teams. The tie extended Drexel's unbeaten streak to eight matches. The Dragons are now 6-1-2, while Mason is 4-5-1.
The Dragons tied the game in the 74th minute. Drexel was awarded a corner kick after Loren Stollar's attempt was deflected off a defender. Christine Stevenson lofted the kick towards the near side and Melissa Chapman launched a header into the top corner past Mason keeper Lyndse Hokanson to even the score. The teams remained scoreless over the final 16 minutes of regulation and through both overtime periods.
The Patriots got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the contest. Casey Vornadore, who was a late addition to the starting line-up, fired a shot from approximately 12 yards away. Drexel's Eve Badana made a sprawling save, but the rebound was picked up by Liz Hodges, who fired it into the left corner.
Mason had its chances to increase the lead late in the half, but Drexel's defense thwarted those opportunities. Kelly Pizzingrilli appeared to break in alone on the left side with 20 minutes to play. However, Drexel's Andi Stampone raced back and made a sliding tackle, just yards from the goal. Badana also came up big, robbing Tiana Kallenberger of a goal by snaring a ball that was heading just under the crossbar. Mason outshot Drexel, 9-5, in the first half. In the second half and overtimes, Drexel returned the favor, outshooting the Patriots, 8-3.
Badana and Hokanson each made four saves in the match.
Drexel is off tomorrow, but back in action on Sunday afternoon at Vidas. The Dragons host Towson in a Colonial Athletic Association match beginning at 3 p.m.
