Stanford, Calif. - Drexel Field Hockey's five-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday as the Dragons fell to No. 16 Stanford, 2-1, at Varsity Turf. The Cardinal recorded 10 shots to Drexel's eight, while Drexel held a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners. The Dragons are now 5-1 overall.
The Cardinal opened up play in the Drexel's defensive end earning a quick penalty corner. Alex McCawley and Hope Burke looked to put points on the board for Stanford, but both players fired the ball wide. At 10:20, Drexel's Jantien Gunter turned away Collen Ryan's shot to keep the game scoreless.
Two minutes later, the Cardinal's Courtney Haldeman was able to gain control of the ball and found the back of the cage after a scramble in front of Gunter to give Stanford a 1-0 lead. The Dragons gained momentum off the restart and earned a penalty corner. Freshman Lauren Hibshman took a shot on goal, but Stanford's Dulcie Daves cleared the ball away. At 18:08, California fouled in the circle giving the Dragons another penalty corner opportunity. Drexel tallied two shots, but wasn't able to get the ball past Davies. Stanford held onto the one-goal lead at halftime.
After 17 minutes of play in the second half, Drexel lined up around the circle for a penalty corner. Fleischut fed the ball to Kristen Focht who scored from the right side of the cage to tie the game, 1-1. With just 10 minutes left in the second half, Stanford's Katie Mitchell slipped the ball past the Dragons' defense off of a penalty corner. Sophomore Christina Conrad looked to tie the game in the final minutes, but Davies made a big save to preserve the Cardinal lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jantien Gunter made two saves. She now has 24 stops on the season. Stanford's goalkeeper Dulcie Davies made five saves for the win.
The Dragons continue their fifth consecutive road game at Lafayette on Friday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. followed by a short trip to Temple University on Sunday afternoon. Drexel is 2-1 on the road and 1-0 at neutral sites.
