Williamsburg, Va. – Frantz Massenat scored 19 points as Drexel defeated William & Mary, 59-48, in a CAA contest on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons led from start to finish as they held the Tribe, the top shooting team in the league, to just 33 percent from the field. The victory gave Drexel Head Coach Bruiser Flint his 205th win at the school, which tied him with Eddie Burke for second place on the school's career coaching win list.
Drexel's smothering defense was the key to the Dragons stopping their three-game losing streak. William & Mary (7-10, 1-5), the second highest scoring team in the CAA, was held without a field goal for a stretch of 7:40 during the second half as Drexel extended its lead to as many as 16 points in the second half. The Tribe couldn't cut the lead to single digits until the closing seconds of the game. The Dragons iced the game by making four free throws in the final minute, two by Massenat and two by Kazembe Abif. In the final 20 minutes, Drexel allowed just eight field goals.
The Dragons played an efficient game on the offensive end, shooting 43 percent and making eight of 19 from behind the arc. The Dragons committed just seven turnovers that led to only two Tribe points.
In the first 20 minutes in Williamsburg, a place where they have struggled in the past, the Dragons got off to a quick start and did not trail in the game. Drexel committed just one turnover in the half, that coming on an offensive foul, and made five of its 10 long-range attempts. Damion Lee drained a three-pointer in the final seconds to put the Dragons ahead 32-24 at intermission. Massenat had a solid first half, making five of his seven shots, including three from deep, and led the Dragons with 13 first half points.
Overall, Massenat was 7-for-14 from the floor and made three treys. He also grabbed five boards and handed out four assists. Lee finished with 10 points after missing the last two games due to injury. The Dragons were without starting forward and leading rebounder Daryl McCoy, who has been hampered by a foot injury. However, Dartaye Ruffin and Abif picked up the slack on the boards. Ruffin tied his season-high with 11 rebounds and Abif chipped in with seven as Drexel outrebounded the Tribe by nine.
Drexel concludes its stretch of three straight road games on Wednesday night. The Dragons face Hofstra in Hempstead at 7 p.m.
