Drexel Crew Shows Speed at the Navy Day Regatta

RESULTS
PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Crew placed in the top 5 in five out of six events at the 2013 Navy Day Regatta hosted on the Schuylkill River on Saturday afternoon. The men's second varsity eight boat finished second overall, while the men's top varsity eight placed third overall. The women's varsity eight captured fourth place along with the women's varsity four. The women's second varsity eight placed fifth and the men's top freshmen eight shell recorded 11th overall.
The men's top varsity eight earned third overall with a time of 11:52.14 out of 32 entries. Marc Smith guided the Lois Krall boat with stroke Mikulas Sum, Ivo Krakic, Sebastian Ryan, Nicholas Capaldi, Ian Luetzow, Dave Hanrahan, Daniel Palombo and bow Vanja Busic. Penn stopped the clock first followed by the U.S. Naval Academy.
The men's varsity eight 'B' shell competed in the same race and finished 25th overall with a time of 13:10.88. The Joseph Greipp boat was highlighted by coxswain Christopher Henderson, stroke Ryan McSpedon, John Pieper, James Byrne, Cameron Staines, Marko Durica, Matt Gehret and bow Casimir Czworkowski. Together, Drexel finished ahead of Delaware, Rutgers, Saint Joseph's, West Point, Temple, Villanova, Lehigh, Loyola, New York Maritime, The Haverford School, La Salle, Franklin and Scranton.
The men's second varsity eight 'B' boat posted the best finish for the Dragons taking second overall with a time of 12:10.53 out of 11 participating crews. Coxswain Rio Monte led the Annette Pennoni shell with stroke Robert Greene, Daniel Dollin, Brian Kissam, Jake Murphy, Michael Scott, John Deibler, Ethan McCulla and bow Andrew Weinstein. The U.S. Naval Academy stopped the clock at 12:10.12 for first-place.
The men's second varsity eight 'A' shell posted a time of 12:17.05 earning fourth-place in the same race. The Vince Vidas boat featured coxswain Victoria Kenion, stroke Christian Ladd, Xavier Stanish, Dean Hill, Ryan Mallgrave, Mahmoud Shurbaji, Leif Malm, Grigorios Papadourakis and bow Brian McCabe. Drexel crossed the finish line ahead of Delaware, Penn, Rutgers and Villanova.
The men's top freshmen eight shell posted a time of 13:05.22 for 11th overall out of 23 opposing boats. Brett Barry coxed the Peggy Greenawalt along with stroke Adam Wisniowski, George Twardy, John Ruskey, James Purtill, Tom Foulds, Nico Arechabala, Dan Capone and bow Adam Davis. Penn took first-place followed by the U.S. Naval Academy in second.
The freshmen eight 'B' shell followed at 14:09.56 for 17th overall. The Class of '72 boat featured coxswain Jackson Beach, stroke Keegan Shannon, Nick Herceg, Brian Tindall, Louis Masi, Will Cartwright, Jim Howley, Brendan Bowens and bow Peter Raux. The Dragons finished before Lehigh, New York Maritime, Rutgers and Delaware.
On the women's side, the varsity eight stopped the clock at 13:41.64 for fourth-place out of 21 participating crews. The Marlene Buckley II was spotlighted by coxswain Kerry Walsh, stroke Olivia Babiec, Bridget Pfeifer, Kayla Wroblesky, Samantha Cowan, Amanda Kleuser, Elizabeth Daugherty, Stephanie Thomas and bow Elise Levito. Navy, Penn and Saint Joseph's earned the top three spots respectively. The Dragons outlasted shells from West Point, Rutgers, Temple, Delaware, Lehigh, Franklin, Philadelphia, La Salle, St. Mary's and Bryn Mawr.
The women's varsity four also recorded fourth overall with a time of 16:35.73 against seven opposing teams. Penn's shells captured first, second and third place. Nupur Parikh guided the Dawn Byers boat along with stroke Hannah Devlin, Chelsea Cohen, Emma Cardwell and bow Jenna O'Toole ahead of West Point, Catholic University and Sarah Lawrence.
The women's top second varsity eight stopped the clock at 14:23.14 for fifth-place out of 10 programs. The Marlene Buckley boat featured coxswain Catherine Hamilton, stroke Tori King, Kendall Wentzell, Emily Gartland, Colleen Delaney, Marina Forster, Alyssa Leahy, Barbara McKenna and bow Julie McGlynn.
Drexel's second varsity eight 'B' shell followed taking seventh overall with a time of 14:34.80. Sarah Messenger, stroke Amanda O'Malley, Lauren Sand, Taylor Brady, Christina Alleva, Gabby Salcedo, Molly Dudrear, Crystal Xu and bow Julia Iannucci outlasted Temple, Delaware, West Point and Rutgers in the John Daskalakis boat.
Drexel Crew will return to action on October 20 at the Head of the Charles Regatta hosted in Boston, Mass.
