10/17/2013 8:31:00 PM | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA – The No. 20 Drexel field hockey team blanked Lafayette, 1-0, in a non-conference match-up on Thursday night at Buckley Field. Junior Chloe Pachuilo scored the game-winning goal after 38 minutes of even play. The Dragons outshot the Leopards, 9-4, while both teams tallied three offensive penalty corners in the second half. Drexel bettered its record to 10-4 overall and 5-1 at home.
After a tighly contested first half, the Dragons and Leopards remained knotted at zero. With just under four minutes into the second half, the Dragons drew an offensive penalty corner. Christina Conrad reverse chipped the ball towards the cage until Lafayette's defender blocked the incoming shot. Junior Chloe Pachuilo quickly recovered the loose ball and lifted it over opposing goalkeeper Jessica Deutsch giving the Dragons a one-goal advantage.
At 21:09, Lafayette earned two straight penalty corners. On the second attempt, Drexel's Jantien Gunter made a glove save stopping Brittnay Blass' direct hit and helped Drexel preserve the 1-0 lead. The Dragons continued to pressure the Leopards' defense and maintained possession on the attacking end. In the final two minutes of play, Drexel looked to add two more points, however, Deutsch turned away both shots holding the Dragons' to a one-goal victory.
Junior goalkeeper Jantien Gunter posted four key saves and earned her third shutout of the season. She now has 73 saves combined.
Drexel will host No. 16 Temple on Sunday, October 20 at 1:00 p.m. on Alumni Day.
