No.16 Temple Defeats Field Hockey, 1-0
10/20/2013 2:59:00 PM | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA – The No. 20 Drexel field hockey team drops a close 1-0 decision to No. 16 Temple in a non-conference match-up on Sunday afternoon at Buckley Field. Both teams were tied at halftime until the Owls converted on a penalty stroke awarded in 44th minute of the contest. The Dragons move to 10-5 overall and remain 1-1 in conference play.
Despite multiple scoring opportunities in both offensive circles, Drexel and the Owls were unable add points on the scoreboard after the first 35 minutes of competitive play. At the start of the second half, each squad drew attacking penalty corners. Both defense units stepped up and kept the score knotted at zero.
With 23:29 remaining in the second half, Temple's Nicole Kroener set up for a penalty stroke. Junior goalkeeper Jantien Gunter made a diving attempt, however, the ball slipped past her left kicker into the right side of the cage. Kroener's goal eventually turned into the game-winning point.
On the defensive end, junior back Allyson Fuller recorded a career-high with two defensive saves against the Owls. Fuller now leads the team with three on the season. Gunter penciled in six stops combining for 79 overall. Offensively, junior Margaux Lourtie tallied a team-high with two shots.
The Dragons will return to conference play next weekend. On October 25, the squad will host William and Mary at 7:00 p.m. under the lights at Buckley Field before traveling to James Madison on October 27. Sunday's game is set for 1:00 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va.
