PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team topped William and Mary, 3-1, at Buckley Field. Senior co-captain Lindsay McArdle tied her career-high with two goals against the Tribe, while goalkeeper Jantien Gunter recorded seven stops on the night. The squad outshot the visiting Tribe, 16-12, and held a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners. The Dragons improved to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
With 16:54 showing on the clock in the opening half, McArdle chipped the ball into the top right netting of the cage to give the Dragons a 1-0 advantage over William and Mary. Five minutes later, senior co-captain Elise DiDonato had a clear look to cage until opposing goalkeeper Cate Johnson slid out to block the incoming shot. DiDonato jabbed the loose ball towards the empty cage, however, the Tribe's defender Kelsea Hull dove across the goal line for a defensive save to keep Drexel off of the scoreboard.
In the opening minutes of the second half, McArdle blasted a shot on goal. Conrad recovered the stopped shot and lifted the rebound over Johnson's left shoulder. At 27:58, William & Mary tested Drexel's defense and drew a penalty corner. The Tribe's Emma Clifton crossed the ball to teammate Taylor Hodge, who found the bottom left corner of the goal to cut the Dragons' lead in half, 2-1.
With 5:52 remaining in the second half, Drexel earned its fifth penalty corner of the half. McArdle received the ball near the left post from Conrad and lifted the ball into the top right corner of the cage to extend Drexel's lead back to two points, 3-1. The Dragons held possession and earned back-to-back penalty corners as the clock winded down to zero to hold off the Tribe.
McArdle is now tied for 10th on Drexel's all-time scoring list. Against the Tribe, Conrad tallied a goal and an assist in the win. In the backfield, junior goalkeeper Jantien Gunter made seven stops on the night combining for 86 total saves.
The Dragons return to action on October 27 at James Madison. Sunday's game is set for 1:00 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va.
