Wilmington, N.C. – The Drexel women's soccer defeated UNC Wilmington, 1-0, on Friday evening to keep themselves in playoff contention and improve to 6-10-1, 2-5 CAA. The Seahawks, who also have a chance at tournament play, move to 8-9, 3-4 CAA.
The victory marks the Dragons' fourth shutout of the season. It also marks the 17th shutout of junior keeper Eve Badana's career, which ties the school record currently held by Kaitlin Bond (2005-2008).
The Dragons and the Seahawks battled through the first half, getting off five and four shots respectively. Despite multiple attempts from both teams, the game remained scoreless going into halftime.
As the second half began, Drexel came out with an early attempt from Christine Stevenson that was saved by UNCW's Carolyn Huddy. Less than two minutes later, the Seahawks got a shot off that went high. They followed with two more unsuccessful attempts in the next ten minutes. Possession continued to switch back and forth as the game remained scoreless.
In the 83rd minute, sophomore Lauren Stollar fired the ball into the net off a corner kick from Megan Hammaker to put the Dragons on the board and ultimately secure the win. Badana pulled down a final attempt from the Seahawks in the 88th minute to give the Dragons their second conference victory of the season.
The Dragons outshot the Seahawks, 15-10. Badana recorded two saves while Huddy tallied seven.
Drexel will close out the regular season on Sunday as they take on new CAA-member College of Charleston on the road at 1:00 p.m. Along with a victory over the Cougars, the Dragons will need conference- rival Delaware to defeat UNC Wilmington in order for Drexel to advance to the tournament.
