PHILADELPHIA – The No. 16 Drexel field hockey team extends its winning streak to six games with a dominating 6-1 victory over Dartmouth on Friday night at Buckley Field. The Dragons outshot the Big Green, 23-5, and held a 10-7 advantage in offensive penalty corners. The squad improved to 8-2 overall and 4-0 at home.
In the opening 1:09 of play, sophomore Lauren Hibshman's hit from outside the circle was deflected into the upper left side of the goal by Dartmouth's defender giving the Dragons an early 1-0 advantage. With 16 minutes off of the clock, the Big Green's Ellen Meyer turned away junior Christina Conrad's shot, however, Conrad one-touched the rebound past Meyer's kickers to extend the Dragons' lead to two-goals, 2-0.
Less than two minutes in the first half, senior co-captain Elise DiDonato fed the ball to junior Rachel Sumfest, who made a diving finish giving Drexel a 3-0 cushion. The Dragons outshot the Big Green, 16-4, while both squads drew five corners each after the first 35 minutes of play.
Drexel opened the second half on the attacking end. In the 46th minute of the game, senior co-captain Kristen Focht fired the incoming pass from Hibshman into the bottom left corner of the cage. Five minutes later, freshman Jessica McCarthy scored off of a direct hit from the Dragons' offensive penalty corner play. As the clock winded down to zero, Drexel's Margaux Lourtie tallied the final point of the contest off the Dragons' 10th penalty corner of the night.
Hibshman tied her career-high with three assists. Defensively, junior goalkeeper Jantien Gunter made a stop for the Dragons combining for 60 saves on the season. Focht also earned her first defensive save of the year.
The Dragons will host Rutgers at 2:00 p.m. on October 6. Sunday's game marks Drexel's Play4theCure event as the squad will sport pink socks. Custom Play4theCure t-shirts will also be on sale with all profits donated to National Foundation for Cancer Research. Admission to the game is free.
