PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Field Hockey shutout Towson, 4-0, in its final regular season contest at Buckley Field on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons outshout the Tigers, 24-4, and held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners. Drexel will advance to its sixth Colonial Athletic Association Championship tournament next Friday hosted at Delaware University. The 2013 squad enters post-season play 13-6 overall and 4-2 in the league.
Following a penalty corner option in the 19th minute of the first half, senior co-captain Elise DiDonato fired a shot on target that was kicked away by Towson's Brittany Varacallo. Junior Rachel Sumfest flicked the rebound into the upper netting of the goal giving the Dragons a one-goal lead.
At 17:36, Drexel earned a penalty corner. Stopper Lauren Hibshman carried the ball towards the right side of the field before crossing it to the opposite side of the circle. DiDonato directed a pass to senior co-captain Lindsay McArdle, who lifted the incoming ball into the back of the cage helping Drexel earn a 2-0 advantage over the Tigers.
With 11:40 showing on the clock in the opening half, junior Margaux Lourtie connected with McArdle. The senior forward pulled the ball left avoiding Varcallo's stack before shooting the ball into the bottom right corner of Towson's goal.
At the start of the second half, McArdle sent a long ball inside of the circle as Varacallo dove towards the left post. Sophomore Danielle Grassi intercepted the incoming ball and fired it past the Tigers' goalkeeper. Drexel maintain the 4-0 lead until the game clock expired.
Junior goalkeeper Jantien Gunter recorded four saves combining for 100 stops during regular season. Gunter tallied her fifth shutout of the year. Drexel's redshirt freshmen Ainslie Rhoads saw action in the final seven minutes of Sunday's game. Opposing goalkeeper Brittany Varacallo tallied eight saves, while Megan Boyle also registered five stops for the Tigers.
Drexel seniors Elise DiDonato, Kristen Focht and Lindsay McArdle had standout performances in their final contest at Buckley Field. McArdle also tied her career-best with two goals against the Tigers.
The 2013 CAA Championship will kick off next weekend starting with two semifinal contests on Friday, November 8 and the title game set for Sunday, November 10. The four-team tournament will be held at top-seeded Delaware. Visit www.caasports.com for more information on this year's championship.
