Men's and Women's Squash Handle Virginia on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's and women's squash teams played their final home matches of the season on Saturday, with the women's team defeating Virginia 8-1 while the men took down the Cavaliers 9-0. Drexel honored its four seniors before the matches. All four - Anna Schmiedicke, Atiqah Shahrin, Paul Jamrogowicz and Kevin Sacherman - were victorious in their individual matches as Drexel rolled.
The women were on the courts first, with Virginia forfeiting the No. 9 match due to a lack of healthy players. Drexel earned its other seven victories in straight sets. Playing at No. 7, Schmiedicke trumped Virginia's Jane Pennoyer 11-5, 11-2, 11-1. Shahrin, holding down No. 4, held off Tara Simonson in a close first set, 11-9, then cruised to the next two sets by 11-2, 11-7 counts.
Alex Dodson won the match at No. 8 for Drexel, while Davila Thompson triumphed at No. 6. Thompson had perhaps the most dominant match of the day for the Dragons, going 11-2, 11-3, 11-1 for the win. Courtney Sabo handled business at No. 5, while Laura Rahauser rolled to an 11-2, 11-2, 11-0 win at No. 3. Damindhi Udangawa won at the top spot on Drexel's ladder, 11-8, 11-0, 11-2.
On the men's side, Drexel once again won the match at No. 9 by default. Their eight other victories were all three-set affairs, with Virginia failing to win a single set.
Jamrogowicz, playing at No. 8, breezed to an 11-1, 11-5, 11-5 win over Peter Dorsey in his final home match as a Dragon. Sacherman, seeded sixth for Drexel, won 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 over Robert Patterson to pick up his point.
Marc Rademaker took care of No. 7 Jack Pellington, winning 11-7, 11-3, 11-1. Nick DiDonato cruised at No. 5, winning 11-4, 11-2, 11-3. At No. 4 Ben Bevan withstood a strong fight from Campbell Goodman, earning the straight set victory 11-5, 12-10, 11-8.
The top three positions on Drexel's ladder continued their outstanding spring with three more straight set victories. At No. 3, Sebastian Dangond won 11-5, 11-7, 11-9. Joey Gingold stepped up at No. 2 and took care of an 11-3, 11-9, 11-6 win. Finally, Binura Jayasuriya downed Ned Whelan, 11-6, 11-1, 11-4.
