Wrestling Falls Short of Binghamton in Home Opener, 22-18

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Drexel wrestling team fell to Binghamton, 22-18, on Sunday afternoon despite a strong effort in the 2013-14 home opener. The Dragons move to 4-11 overall and 0-2 EIWA on the season while the Bearcats improve to 3-8, 2-5 EIWA.
Binghamton struck first, taking the 125 match as freshman Tanner Shoap lost by major decision. Redshirt freshman Kevin Devoy Jr followed at 133 with a pin at 2:55 to give the Dragons a 6-4 lead. Matthew Cimato then fell by major decision to Binghamton's Nick Tighe to put the Bearcats back up 8-6. Noel Blanco earned a strong 4-3 decision at 149 to take back the lead at 9-8. Continuing the lead change trend, Binghamton's Joe Bonaldi earned a 6-4 decision over Austin Sommer despite a strong fight from the senior.
Jason Fugiel then gave Drexel a 12-11 lead with a 4-0 decision at 165 and Kevin Matyas followed with a 10-4 decision at 174 to put the Dragons up 15-11 with three matches remaining. Freshman Alex DeCiantis continued Drexel's win streak with a 6-4 decision at 184 to increase the Dragons' lead to 18-11.
Despite Drexel's run, Binghamton regained momentum in the last two matches, winning by technical fall at 197 and by fall at 285 to take back the lead and earn a dual win with a score of 22-18.
The Dragons return to action on Friday as they travel to Hempstead, N.Y. to take on Hofstra beginning at 7:00 p.m.
