Philadelphia, Pa. - The Drexel women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw with Towson through two overtimes on Senior Day at Vidas Field Sunday. With the conclusion of this weekend's play, the Dragons have now clinched their second Colonial Athletic Association playoff berth in program history.
Towson struck first in the 26th minute after Drexel fouled within striking distance. The Tigers set up for a free kick as if they were going to serve it into the box, but then passed it to the side of the wall of Drexel players to set up Sofia Read for an open shot. Towson would maintain a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Less than five minutes into the second half Drexel retaliated as Megan Hammaker served a corner kick into the box and found Melissa Chapman, who headed it into the left side of the net to tie the game up at 1-1. In the 69th minute Alyssa Findlay found Hammaker who bent a shot into the top of the left side panel to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead.
Drexel maintained their lead into the 82nd minute until Towson's Katie Ponce made broke away from the Drexel defense and went one-on-one with Abbey Romano in the box. As Drexel keeper Kelsie Fye came out of the net to help Romano try to get the ball away from Ponce, the Tigers' standout quickly put the ball in the opposite side of the net to tie the game up yet again. As time wound down in regulation, the game remained even at 2-2.
Each team had a decent amount of opportunties in both the first and second overtimes, but ultimately the game ended in a draw. Overall, the Dragons outshot the Tigers, 29-12. Fye recorded two saves in the tie, while Towson's Erin Quinn tallied 12.
Drexel remains in third place in the CAA as it moves to 7-6-3 overall and 4-1-2 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Tigers move to 4-8-4 on the season and 1-4-2 against CAA opponents.
Next up for Drexel, the Dragons travel to Hofstra on Friday, Oct. 24 where they will face off with the Pride at 7:00 p.m. They will finish then finish out the regular season with a trip to Northeastern on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1:00 p.m.
