Hempstead, N.Y. - The Drexel women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Hofstra on the road on Friday evening. The Dragons' lone goal of the game was scored by Megan Hammaker, her fifth of the season.
Hofstra got on the board in the 29th minute as Lulu Echeverry headed the ball in off a cross from Leah Galton. Despite a few attempts from the Dragons, the Pride was able to maintain its 1-0 lead into halftime.
Just under 10 minutes into the second half, Hofstra struck again as Galton this time was able to head the ball into the net off a corner kick from Jeannine Molleda for her 10th goal of the season. Less than a minute later, the Dragons retaliated as Hammaker sank the ball into the right corner to trim the Pride's lead to 2-1.
Around the 78th minute, Drexel had some strong opportunities to tie the game up as Melissa Chapman took back-to-back header shots that both went wide. Less than a minute later, Sam Greenfield got off another attempt, but it found the crossbar. Despite their efforts, the Dragons were unable to overcome the deficit that Hofstra had created.
The Pride outshot the Dragons, 19-10. Junior keeper Kelsie Fye recorded four saves in the losing effort, while Hofstra's Friederike Mehring stopped two Drexel attempts.
The loss moves the Dragons to 7-7-3 on the season and 4-2-2 in conference action. Hofstra improves to 10-6-1, 5-2-1 CAA and passes Drexel as they move into third place in the conference standings. The Dragons now reside in fifth place in the CAA going into Sunday's regular season finale.
To close out the 2014 regular season, the Dragons will travel to conference-leading Northeastern on Sunday to take on the Huskies at 1:00 p.m.
