New Brunswick, N.J. - The Drexel wrestling team fell to Rutgers, 33-6, on the road on Friday evening. The loss moves the Dragons to 7-14 overall and 1-5 in EIWA competition this season, while the Scarlet Knights improved to 11-5, 7-2 EIWA.
Rutgers came out strong, taking the 125 match with a pin over Tanner Shoap to go ahead 6-0. The Scarlet Knights followed with two consecutive decisions at 133 and 141 and another win-by-fall at 149, which increased their lead to 18-0. Austin Sommer got the Dragons on the board with a 7-5 decision at 157 over Rutgers' Anthony Perrotti. However, the Scarlet Knights followed with three more decisions at 165, 174, and 184 respectively to go ahead 27-3. Brandon Palik added a 9-3 decision at 197 for the Dragons, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit that Rutgers had created.
The Dragons return home on Saturday evening as they host city rival Penn on Senior Night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Seniors Shane Fenningham, Kevin Matyas, Austin Sommer, and Brandon Palik, as well as former Dragon Steven Winfield, will be honored prior to the dual. The match, which begins at 5:00 p.m., will also mark the inaugural year of the battle for the Abner's Cheesesteak Trophy between the two West Philadelphia teams.
