OKLAHOMA CITY – Unable to pick up a win and move on to day two of the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, Kevin Devoy Jr, 133, Austin Sommer, 157, and Brandon Palik, 197, laid it all on the line but landed on the wrong side of the mat. All three Dragons went 0-2 on the day after some narrow losses in this year's host city of Oklahoma City, Okla. Palik and Sommer, both seniors, concluded standout careers at this year's national tournament.
Devoy, the redshirt freshman competing in his first NCAA tournament, fell to No. 12 Joe Roth of Central Michigan in the first round. He made an attempt to battle back in the consolation rounds, but ultimately was defeated by Dominick Malone of Northwestern, 6-3.
Sommer lost by technical fall in the opening round to No. 3-ranked Alex Dieringer of Oklahoma State. The senior's career was ended in consolations with a 10-2 loss to Duke's Immanuel Kerr-Brown.
Palik was narrowly defeated by No. 7 Travis Rutt of Oklahoma, 5-3, in the championship first round. Given a chance to wrestle back, the senior put up a strong fight but was edged by No. 10 Jace Bennett of Cornell.
