PITTSBURGH - The Drexel wrestling team concluded competition at the Pitt Duals on Sunday after picking up both a win and a loss. The Dragons defeated Bloomsburg, 27-6 but then went on to be defeated by the hosting Panthers, 27-12. The Dragons move to a 4-5 overall team record on the season.
Tanner Shoap started off the day for Drexel with a technical fall over Bloomsburg's Eliot Zackoski. Kevin Devoy Jr., who's currently ranked 12th at 133 pounds by Intermat, followed with a 5-0 decision over Andy Schutz to put the Dragons ahead, 8-0. David Pearce and Matthew Cimato each added a decision at 141 and 149 pounds respectively, and then Noel Blanco followed with a 12-2 major decision over Bloomsburg's Matt Hammerstone to increase the Dragons' lead to 18-0. Bloomsburg was able to get on the board with a win at 165, but then Drexel extended its lead as Connor Moran picked up an 8-6 decision at 174 and Alex DeCiantis earned a 9-3 decision at 184. The Huskies picked up one more win in the 197 match, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit the Dragons had created.
Pittsburgh started off strong in the Dragons' second match of the day, as they picked up wins in the first two matches to go ahead 7-0. Pearce received a forfeit at 141 pounds to put Drexel on the board, 7-6 and then Cimato followed with an 7-4 decision at 149 that put the Dragons ahead, 9-7. Blanco added a win in the 157 match to extend Drexel's lead to 12-7. However, Pittsburgh won the next five matches to regain the lead and win the dual with a final score of 27-12.
Next up, the Dragons will return to the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Friday, Jan. 16 when they host Lock Haven at 7:00 p.m.
