Day 3 Recap of Pioneer Valley Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – On the final day of the Pioneer Valley Invitational both of the Drexel squash teams won their matches versus the No. 20/18 Amherst College Jeffs. The men beat Amherst 9-0 and only dropped five games to the Jeffs. The women beat the Jeffs 8-1 and did not drop a game in any of the eight games in which the Dragons won.
Atticus Kelly moved to 3-1 in the number one spot on the weekend with his 3-1 win over Noah Browne. Luke Willemse dropped the first two games of his match with Scott DeSantis but won the final three to get the win in five games.
Ibrahim Bakir and Cillian Dunne won in four games out of spots three and four in the lineup. Mark Kauf, Nat Fry, Sebastian Dangond, Joey Gingold and Michal Jackomowicz all swept their opponents.
The women wrapped up an impressive weekend with the 8-1 win. The Dragons dropped just two individual matches over the weekend. Drexel cruised iin virtually every match. In their eight match wins just Hayley Hughes' second game and Abigail Kaplan's second game were pushed past 11.
Kristine Giltvedt won the first game versus Corri Johnson but Johnson came back to win three straight to prevent a 9-0 Dragon sweep.
Up next for Drexel is a home match versus Penn on Tuesday at 5 and 6:30 p.m. The Quakers are ranked No. 1 in the latest women's rankings and No. 10 in the men's rankings.
Day 2 Recap
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - On the second day of the Pioneer Valley Invitational the Dragons went a perfect 4-0. Both squads have now won three straight.
The men got their second win in as many days when they took down the No. 20 Wesleyan Cardinals, 7-2, in their morning match. The men were very close to getting a 9-0 sweep of the Cardinals but the Cardinals squeaked out wins in the seven and eight matchups. Atticus Kelly, Ibrahim Bakir, Cillian Dunne and Mark Kauf won in three games. For Bakir and Kauf it was the second straight match in which they won in three games.
Luke Willemse won in four games after dropping the first game 11-8 to Raheem Logan. Michael Thompson came back from two games down, including a 14-12 loss in game two, versus Chris Hark to win in five.
In the women's first match of the day versus No. 21 Wesleyan the Dragons came away with an 8-1 win. Elisa Money, Kaitlyn Money, Laura Rahauser, Kiran Vasdevan and Abigail Kaplan all won in 3-0 sweeps.
Ryan Morgan won in four sets versus Laura Nelson. Mary Fung-A-Fat also won in four sets versus Claire Miller. Kristine Guiltvedt dropped the first game versus Bridget Doherty but came back to win in four games.
In the afternoon the Drexel beat the No. 22/19 Bowdoin Polar Bears on both the men's and women's sides by 9-0 scores. The men recorded 3-0 sweeps in seven of the eight played matches. Nat Fry was the lone Dragon that played a fourth game, he won it 13-11. Bowdoin defaulted the ninth match.
The women did not drop a game versus the Polar Bears. Morgan and Kaitlyn Money were pushed past regulation in the third game but both won their by a 12-10 score to complete the sweep.

The last 9-0 sweep by the women came versus Haverford on January 31, 2014. The win snaps a six-game losing streak dating back to last season for the women. Drexel is now 2-0 all-time versus Smith with both wins coming by 9-0 sweeps.
The women did not drop a game in any of their matches versus the Pioneers. In spots two through nine the Dragons did not surrender anymore than four points in a single game. Elisa Money, Kaitlyn Money, Mary Fung-A-Fat, Laura Rahauser, Kiran Vasudevan, Abigail Kaplan and Kristine Gilvedt all shutout their opponent in at least one game in their matches.
In the first meeting between the two schools the Dragons topped the Mustangs, 6-3. The men snap a seven game losing streak that dated back to the last three matches of last season.
Drexel got wins from Luke Willemse, Ibrahim Bakir, Cillian Dunne, Mark Kauf, Sebastian Dangond and Joey Gingold. Willemse, Dangond and Gingold all won in four sets. Gingold finished off his match with a close 12-10 win in game four.
Bakir got a three game sweep out of the number three spot. Kauf also won by way of a sweep in the number 6 spot in the lineup. Dunne won the final three games after dropping the first two by a total of four points.
The Dragons are back in action tomorrow morning when the men and women both play Wesleyan at 10:30 a.m., which is followed by a match with Bowdoin at 1:30 p.m.
