Dragons Swept by No. 10/1 Quakers

PHILADELPHIA - After going a combined 8-0 last weekend at the Pioneer Valley Invitational, the Drexel men's and women's squash teams were swept by the No. 10 Quakers and the No. 1 Quakers respectively at the Kline and Specter Squash Center on Tuesday night. The men fell 6-3 and fall to 4-5 on the season, while the women dropped a 9-0 match that slides their record to 4-6. The win improves the men of Penn to 6-3 and the women move to 8-1 on the season.
Luke Willemse got the Dragons off to a good start by picking up his seventh win of the season by beating Derek Hsue in the number two spot in five games. Willemse won games two and three before falling in a tough game four 12-10. The freshman then won game five, 11-4. The Dragons got their two other wins of the night in the opening round of matches with Michael Thompson and Mark Kauf winning in spots four and six respectively. Thompson beat Anders Larson in four close games for his four win of the season, where each game was decided by three points or less. Kauf secured his sixth win of the season versus Liam Quinn in a quick 3-0 sweep.
The second round of matches did not go as well for the Dragons as they dropped all four matches and were swept in three of them. Atticus Kelly battled back from a 2-1 deficit to to force a fifth game but fell 11-7 to Marwan Mahmoud at the top of the Dragon ladder.
In the first round of matches for the women the Dragons were swept in all five. Penn took control of each match early on and never let Drexel get back into them. Elisa Money tried to extend her match to a fourth game but fell 12-10 to Melissa Alves.
In the final four matches, Drexel was swept in three of them. The lone Dragon to push her match past three games was Kiran Vasudevan versus Grace van Arkel in the seventh spot of the lineup. Vasudevan won the first game 12-10 but dropped the next three games 11-5, 11-5, and 11-7.
Up next for the Dragons is a weekend road trip to New York. The women will play three games in three days; William and Smith on Friday, Cornell on Saturday and Rochester on Sunday. The men are at Cornell on Saturday and at Rochester on Sunday.
