Late Goal Lifts Field Hockey Past Temple, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (6-8) defeated local Philadelphia rival Temple (3-12) by a final of 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Buckley Field.
The Dragons notched three goals in the win with the final, game-winning goal coming with under eight minutes to play. Senior Mary Lynam recorded a game winner and an assist in the win.
Drexel's shot selection was limited under a tenacious Temple Owl defense. The Dragons were held to just four shots in the affair with three resulting in scores.
The first goal came early for Drexel. Just over two minutes in the Dragons earned a penalty corner, one of two on the day. After the insert and initial stop, Lynam put a shot on goal that deflected off the stick of junior Idrienne Walker. Walker was credited with the goal while Lynam got the assist.
Temple tied it up about eight minutes later when Sarah Deck connected with Sarah Keer.
Roughly halfway through the first half, freshman Megan Wiest drove through the circle and took a shot that deflected off junior Alexandra Pickens to give the Dragons the 2-1 advantage at halftime.
Temple tied it up again 12:06 into the second half when Hattie Kuhns assisted Erin VanHorn.
With time running down, Drexel earned its second penalty corner with around eight minutes remaining. Freshman Katie Bagdon inserted the ball to senior Lauren Hibshman, who settled the ball for Lynam. Lynam dribbled a foot inside the circle before blasting a shot past the Temple goalkeeper, 3-2. Bagdon and Hibshman both earned assists on the play.
The goal came as the game winner as Drexel held on for the final 7:59. Temple pulled its goalkeeper for the final 5:19 but could not build enough offensive pressure for an equalizer.
Drexel freshman goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist (W, 4-1) made five saves on the afternoon and faced a total of 19 shots, seven on goal.
Drexel was held to just two shots in each period, scoring on both in the first half and then on the final shot of the game.
Temple owned the edge on penalty corners, 5-2, shots, 19-4, and shots on goal, 7-3.
The Dragons improved to 6-8 on the season with the win after starting the season 1-6; Drexel is 5-2 since September 28.
Drexel will now host the Penn Quakers in a nonconference matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. from Buckley Field for the team's fourth-straight home game.
