PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (6-9) fell to the Penn Quakers on Wednesday evening by a final of 5-1 from Buckley Field.
The Dragons jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the game. Just over four minutes into the contest senior Lauren Hibshman made a pass to freshman Amy Ferguson. The pass came from the sideline, connecting with Ferguson just on the inside of the circle. Ferguson took the long shot that flew by the Penn goalkeeper to give Drexel the 1-0. The goal came as the first of Ferguson's collegiate career and Hibshman's second assist on the season.
And Drexel held onto that one-goal margin for the next 34 minutes as the game went into the second half 1-0.
Three minutes into the final period, Penn tied the game up as sophomore Alexa Hoover scored her first of the night as she tipped a shot in from fellow sophomore Gina Guccione.
Two minutes later the Quakers took the lead on the first of two penalty corner goals on the evening. Freshman Selena Garzio took the shot from the top of the circle as Claire Kneizys and Elizabeth Hitti were credited with the assists.
With under 20 minutes to play, Penn took a 3-1 lead on a deflection off the stick of Hoover. It came as Hoover's second and Hitti's second assist. The pair connected again on an odd-player rush as Hoover notched her third. Hoover took the ball down the field before passing over to Hitti who gave it back to Hoover for the score, 4-1.
The final Penn goal came with 2:57 left to play on a penalty corner; Garzio's second of the night with assists to Kneizys and Elise Tilton.
The Dragons outshot the Quakers, 11-9, as shots on goal were tied at six apiece. Drexel freshman Megan Wiest led the squad with four while junior Jessica McCarthy notched three.
Penalty corners were tied, 2-2, as Penn took advantage on both of its corner opportunities.
Freshman goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist (L, 4-2) took the loss for Drexel as she started and played the first 51:25. Junior Ainslie Rhoads came on in relief for the final 18:35.
Drexel now heads to Hofstra for a Sunday, Oct. 25 conference matchup at 1 p.m. for the final road game of the regular season. The Dragons are back at home on Friday, Oct. 30 and Sunday, Nov. 1 to close out the schedule.
