Field Hockey Falls to No. 16 JMU in CAA Semifinals

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Drexel field hockey team (8-11) fell to the No. 4 seeded James Madison Dukes (14-5) on Friday afternoon at the JMU Field Hockey Complex in a semifinal matchup at the CAA Championships in Harrisonburg, Va. by a final score of 3-0. The loss ended the Dragons' season with a record of 8-11.
The teams exchanged corner opportunities in the early goings of the afternoon affair. Senior Jenna Knouse, an All-Academic CAA honoree, was credited with a defensive save early as she blocked a shot on James Madison's first corner opportunity in the first half. Junior Jessica McCarthy, an All-CAA Second Team selection, got a shot off for the Dragons on their offensive chance a few minutes later. It came as Drexel's lone shot of the opening period.
The Dukes' Taylor West, recently named the CAA Player of the Year, got JMU on the board 18:41 in the contest. West knocked in the high shot on the right post to give James Madison the lead.
The Dragons limited the Dukes to five shots in the first half, only the third time JMU was held to five shots or less in 19 games this year.
James Madison struck again 1:05 into the second half to take a 2-0 advantage. The Dukes received a penalty corner. After an initial shot, Adrienne le Vatte scooped up a rebound for the score.
The Dukes scored their second half goal about midway through the second half. A second chance on a corner extended the lead for JMU with 19:43 to play. Miranda Rigg put the rebound back in at the top of the cage. The goal came on an advantage for JMU as Drexel's McCarthy was assessed a five-minute yellow card at 20:57.
Drexel got a good scoring opportunity with around 14 minutes to play. A pass into the circle reached junior Idrienne Walker, who dished it to McCarthy. McCarthy took the shot, but it went wide. McCarthy added a third shot seven minutes later on a penalty corner.
Drexel was outshot 14-3 in the loss. JMU also had a 4-2 penalty corner edge.
Junior Ainslie Rhoads (L, 4-8) made six saves on the day.
The loss ended the Dragons' 2015 season.
