ITHACA, N.Y. – Riding back-to-back victories into Sunday's National Duals in Ithaca, New York, Drexel Wrestling fell to Cornell, 35-6.
Drexel is now 8-11 overall on the year and 5-2 in EIWA competition. Cornell moves to 15-1 overall and 5-0 in the EIWA.
Cornell proved to be perhaps the Dragons' toughest test all year. The Big Red sent nationally ranked wrestlers to the mat in all but two weight classes.
The Dragons kept the match close within the first three weight classes. After losing by fall at 125 pounds, Kevin Devoy Jr. and David Pearce took the 133 pound and 141 pound matches, respectively.
Devoy gained an early advantage on No. 15 Mark Grey and rode his way to way to a 3-2 decision. Pearce then followed, shutting out Logan David, 3-0, and tying the team score a 6-all.
That would be the last of Drexel's scoring on the afternoon, however. Led by top-ranked 184 pounder and one of the best pound-for-pound wrestlers in the country, Gabe Dean, the Big Red was simply too much to handle. While Stephen Loiseau kept his 174 pound match with No. 19 Duke Pickett tight, he ultimately dropped a 5-1 decision. Joey Goodhart came closest to getting the Dragons back on the board at heavyweight, but he too fell, 3-2.
The Dragons return to the mat on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. as they host Rutgers on Senior Night.
