2/21/2015 6:06:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Boston, Mass. – Drexel rallied from a 14-point deficit to force overtime, but Northeastern defeated Drexel, 83-73, at Matthews Arena.
Drexel (10-17, 8-8 CAA) had a chance to win after making an unlikely comeback down the stretch. The Dragons trailed by 11 with 3:14 to play before scoring 10 straight points to make it a one-point game with 1:06 to play. Tavon Allen scored five straight points in the run, including a three-pointer to make it a 61-60 game. Drexel committed a foul on Scott Eatherton, and the senior made one of two, giving the Huskies ()19-10, 11-5) a two-point lead. Drexel had the last possession and after a miss and an offensive team rebound, the Dragons had one last play. Lee drove the lane but missed the shot. Mohamed Bah grabbed the rebound, scored on the put back and was fouled with just seven tenths of a second left. With the game now tied at 62-62, Bah's free throw missed. Sammy Mojica grabbed the offensive board and tipped it towards the basket. The shot went off the rim and out, and the teams went overtime.
In the overtime period, Quincy Ford knocked down a pair of three-pointers as the Huskies opened up an eight-point lead. The Dragons were forced to foul and the Huskies made 11 of their 13 free throws in the extra period. David Walker was 9-for-9 in the extra frame and led Northeastern with 25 points.
Northeastern took a 33-26 lead to intermission. The Huskies led by as many as 12 before the Dragons trimmed the lead to five in the closing seconds. With 1.3 seconds to go Damion Lee scored on a driving lay-in. Northeastern called time and converted an unlikely play to end the half. Zach Stahl threw a baseball pass the length of the floor into the waiting arms of David Walker, who drained a 15-foot jumper as time expired. Lee had 16 of Drexel's 26 points in the first half.
Lee played the entire 45 minutes and had five boards to go with his 30 points. He was just 10-for-28 from the floor, but made nine of 10 free throws. He has now made 38 of his last 39 free throw attempts. He now has 578 points this season, the eighth-highest total in Drexel history. Allen scored 14 points for Drexel, all in the second half. Rodney Williams had 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Mojica, playing in front of friends and family in his hometown, added nine points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
All five Northeastern starters scored in double figures. Ford had 15 points and a team-high seven boards. Reggie Spencer added 13 points, T. J. Williams had 12 and Scott Eatherton scored 10. The Huskies shot 55 percent from the floor and finished 31-for-39 from the line.
Drexel will travel back to Philadelphia and be off until Thursday night. The Dragons close the home portion of their schedule against long-time rival Delaware on Senior Night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
