Women's Tennis Sees Nine-Match Win Streak Snapped Sunday at Penn
2/22/2015 3:14:00 PM | Women's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA – Drexel women's tennis entered Sunday's match having won the first nine dual matches of the season, but Penn proved to be too much as the Dragons fell, 0-7.
The Dragons are now 9-1 on the season. This is their best 10-match start under head coach Mehdi Rhazali.
"Penn is a tough team," Rhazali said. "Matches have been close the last two years. We learned a lot from the loss and the girls know what they need. We will get back at it and get smarter and tougher."
Penn proved to be a tough task for Drexel, jumping on the Dragons early. The Quakers took the doubles point, but not before Lea Winkler and Kendra Bunch teamed up to take down Alexandra Ion and Vazhenina in the No. 3 position, 6-5 (5).
In singles play, Drexel played Penn close in a couple of matches, taking two to three sets. Erin Bowsher stole the first set off of Sonya Latycheva, but after Latycheva blanked her in the second, the junior dropped a long third set, 6-7, 6-0 12-10. Bunch also took the first set in her match, also dropped the second, but ultimately fell in a hard-fought match, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.
The Dragons will have nearly two weeks off before they head to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army on March 6.
