Men's Crew Takes Two Races Against Penn and George Washington
3/21/2015 3:30:00 PM | Men's Rowing
PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Crew's men faced their toughest test of the young season Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River, taking on Penn and George Washington. The Dragons earned victories in a tight varsity four race and in the second freshmen eight race.
Drexel began the morning by jumping out to a quick victory in the varsity four race. The Dragons' 'A' in the Dawn Byers boat raced to a 6:53.7 time, beating the Quakers by just less than two seconds. Drexel's 'B' in the Oxholm boat finished the course in 7:26.5.
The Dragons continued the momentum, racing against a slight headwind, as the second freshmen eight followed with a win in the Peggy Greenwalt boat with a time of 6:14.2. Penn finished at 6:28.0.
In the third varsity eight race that followed, Drexel, racing in the Annette Pennoni boat, finished behind Penn and George Washington, in that order. Penn won with a 6:00.5, while the Dragons raced to a time of 6:15.9.
Penn paced the competition in the freshmen eight race with a fast 5:55.0. The Dragons, in the Vince Vidas boat, finished in second with a 6:08.6 after George Washington failed to follow the race course under the bridge during a turn.
The day concluded with the Dragons mixing up the lineups for their second varsity eight and varsity eight boats. The second varsity eight raced in the Joseph Greipp boat to a 6:05.4 time, behind Penn's winning 5:54.7 time. The varsity eight finished the morning in the Lois Krall boat, rowing to a second-place time of 5:50.2, trailing only the Quakers' 5:46.7.
Penn's and George Washington's varsity eights were ranked in the EARC top 20 in the final poll of 2014.
The Dragons will end their spring break with a portion of the men heading west to California for the San Diego Crew Classic on March 27-28. The rest of the men, as well as the women, will head to the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. for the Murphy Cup on March 28.
