Crew Earns Three Medals Saturday at the Murphy Cup Regatta

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – Drexel Crew earned three top three finishes Saturday, including gold medals from the men's second varsity eight and the men's freshmen eight, at the Murphy Cup Regatta on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
The Dragons qualified six of their 11 boats for finals.
Drexel's men's second varsity eight 'A' took home gold in the Joseph Greipp boat, rowing to a 6:03.45, just edging Temple 'A' by just over a second (6:04.72). The Dragons qualified for the final by winning their heat with a 6:05.09. Drexel also raced a 'B' in second varsity eight action, as the Annette Pennoni boat finished fourth in its heat with a 6:35.17.
The men's freshmen eight 'A,' racing in the Vince Vidas boat, took home the Dragons' other gold medal, outlasting Delaware 'B' by less than a second in the final, 6:10.14 to 6:10.95. Drexel's 'B,' racing in the Peggy Greenwalt boat, finished just short of the podium with a fourth-place 6:24.74 in the final. Both of the Dragons' boats finished one-two in the qualifying heat, as the 'A' finished in 6:13.96 and the 'B' in 6:18.06.
The Dragons' women's varsity eight earned the team's final top three finish, placing third in the grand final with a 6:56.45 in the Marlene Buckley II. Navy took first with a 6:47.29, while Holy Cross finished second. Drexel qualified for the grand final by winning its heat with a 6:57.77.
Drexel's women's second varsity eight also recorded a top five finish on the day, posting a fifth-place time of 7:19.83 in the final. Navy led the way, breaking the seven-minute mark with a 6:59.36. The Dragons, racing in the Maria Papadakis boat, won their heat with a 6:05.09.
The women's freshmen eight was the sixth and final Drexel boat to qualify for the finals, finishing sixth with an 8:19.04 in the Marlene Buckley boat. Temple won the gold with a 7:27.40. Drexel qualified for the final finishing comfortably in second at 7:46.93.
Also racing for the Dragons, but failing to qualify for the finals, were the women's varsity four 'A' and 'B,' the men's varsity four and the men's freshmen four boat. Racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat and the Dawn Byers boat, the women's varsity fours finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the qualifying heat with times of 8:35.90 and 9:11.13. In the LeBow College of Business boat, the men's varsity four missed the final cut by less than five seconds with a time of 7:15.55 in the qualifying heat. Finally, in the Oxholm boat, Drexel's men's freshmen four finished fourth in its heat at 8:02.75.
Drexel's men's varsity eight is competing at the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, Calif. The boat qualified Saturday for Sunday's grand final. Click here for results.
