Crew's Varsity Eights Dominant in Saturday's Double Dual Action

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Crew's first varsity eights each swept their double duals on Saturday on the Schuylkill River. The Dragons men beat Georgetown before taking down Williams, while the women were victorious over Williams and Washington College followed by Bucknell.
Crews were faced with strong wind gusts throughout the morning and afternoon, causing the races to begin with a floating start.
The Dragons' day on the river began with the women taking on Williams and Washington College, where the Blue and Gold was victorious in all but one of the races. Drexel took the varsity eight race in the Marlene Buckley II, 10.1 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Williams. The Dragons also won the second varsity eight race in the Maria Papadakis boat, winning with a time of 7:10.0, about 4.5 seconds ahead of Williams. Racing in the Marlene Buckley boat, Drexel outlasted Williams with a time of 7:17.6 to 7:20.7. Drexel fell to Williams in the varsity four race in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, 8:17.8 to 8:34.5.
The Dragons' men followed with a dual against Georgetown where they took all three of the races. Drexel, in the Sandra Lee Sheller II, edged the Hoyas in the varsity eight race by 2.5 seconds, winning with a time of 5:47.0. In the second varsity eight race, the Dragons beat out Georgetown by 3.1 seconds in the Joseph Greipp boat. Finally, Drexel took the third varsity eight race with a 6:08.0, 3.2 seconds ahead of the Hoyas. The Dragons' second freshmen eight also raced with the third varsities, crossing the finishing with a 6:14.7. Drexel raced in the Annette Pennoni and Vince Vidas boats, respectively.
Drexel's women returned to the water to close their day against rival Bucknell, taking the varisty eight race. The Dragons crossed the finish line at 6:37.0, while the Bison trailed at 6:43.1. Buckenll topped Drexel in the varsity four and freshmen eight races. In the varsity four, Drexel finished 25.5 seconds behind Bucknell's 8:14.0, while Drexel's freshmen eight trailed the Bison's boat (7:20.8) by 4.4 seconds. The Dragons raced in the same boats as their first dual.
The Dragons' oarsmen closed out the Blue and Gold's day on the Schuylkill by sweeping Williams in four races. In the varsity eight race, Drexel jumped out to a quick six flat, with Williams trailing by nine seconds. The Dragons' second varsity eight crossed the finish line at 6:24.0, while Williams trailed at 6:36.7. Drexel's third varsity eight blew Williams away, winning by 33.5 seconds. Finally, the Dragons' freshmen eight won with a fast 6:13.2, beating the team's second freshmen eight (6:30.4) and Williams (6:41.6). Drexel's boats raced in the same boat as their first dual.
The Dragons return to action next weekend at the Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The Knecht Cup will run April 11-12.
