
Crew Wins Four Gold Medals at the Knecht Cup Regatta

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Drexel Crew rowed to five medals at the Knecht Cup Regatta Sunday on Mercer Lake, including four golds, for yet another strong showing.
The Dragons won four gold medals and a bronze against crews from across the country. The men's varsity eight, second varsity eight, freshmen eight and freshmen four won gold medals, while the men's varsity pair won bronze.
The men's varsity eight A, won the gold medal with a winning time of 5:55.53 Sunday, outlasting Hobart's 5:58.54. In semifinals, the Dragons' varsity eight had the fastest time in the round (6:05.63). In the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, it recorded a sub-six time Saturday, winning its heat with a 5:59.23 to advance to the semifinals.
The Dragons' men's second varsity eight, in the Annette Pennoni boat, cruised to a gold medal with a time of 6:02.58, also beating Hobart (6:05.90). In heats Saturday, the boat grabbed a first-place finish in its heat with a 6:07.37.
In the men's freshmen eight, Drexel advanced two boats to the grand final, as the A took the gold medal. In the Joseph Greipp boat, the A rowed to a first-place 6:07.29, winning by more than five seconds. The B, in the Vince Vidas, finished seventh overall with a 6:24.02. In heats, the A won with a 6:11.88, while the B rowed to a 6:16.86.
Drexel's men's freshmen four polished off a gold medal as well in the Oxholm boat. Winning with a time of 7:06.35, the freshmen four beat Rhode Island by nearly three seconds Sunday. In heats, Drexel comfortably won to advance to the grand final with a time of 7:07.35.
The men's varsity pair A started Drexel's day off on a high note, winning the bronze medal with a time of 7:35.16, less than a second behind Lafayette for second. High Point won with a 7:29.20. In its heat Saturday morning, the boat advanced with a 7:34.37.
Drexel's women's varsity eight finished fifth overall with a 6:56.94. Central Florida won with a 6:41.56. The boat finished its semifinal in second to advance to the grand final with a 6:52.44. In the Marlene Buckley II boat, the varsity eight finished second in its Saturday heat at 6:46.32.
The women's second varsity eight finished fifth overall in a close grand final with a 7:00.46. The fourth through sixth finishers were within one second of each other. The boat advanced with a second-place 7:03.32 in the semifinals. Winning its heat, the boat raced in the Maria Papadakis with a 6:54.63.
The varsity pair B finished second in the petite final for ninth overall, 7:47.84, just one one-hundredth of a second behind Rollins. In its heat, the boat advanced to the petite final with a 7:49.44.
Drexel women's freshmen eight finished second in the petite final and ninth overall with a 7:26.37. Bucknell's B won the petite final with a 7:21.37. The boat finished fourth in its heat with a 7:29.95 to move on to the petite final in the Marlene Buckley boat.
In the women's second varsity four, Drexel finished seventh in the petite final with an 8:21.82, good for 14th overall. The Dawn Byers boat finished fifth in its heat with an 8:25.26.
The men's varsity eight B in the Lois Krall Boat finished with a 6:27.29, fifth in its Saturday heat.
The women's varsity four in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat to a fifth-place 8:05.43 in its heat, which fell short of the semifinals. The men's varsity four suffered a similar fate. In the Oxholm boat, the A raced to a third-place 7:10.11 in its heat, while the B, in the LeBow College of Business boat finished fifth in its heat with a 7:14.03.
High winds on Saturday altered the racing schedule, creating a more condensed Sunday schedule.
