
Drexel Crew Wins 49th Annual Kerr Cup Regatta Saturday

PHILADELPHIA – With the Kerr family on hand at the finish line, Drexel Crew won the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup for the fifth year in a row and the Lela H. Kerr Cup for the fifth time in six years at the 49th annual Kerr Cup Regatta Saturday on the Schuylkill River.
Including the two Kerr Cups, the Dragons won a total of eight gold medals on the day.
Drexel's men's varsity eight posted a 6:04.54 to win the Kerr Cup, besting second-place George Mason by more than 12 seconds. Racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II, the men advanced to the final with a winning 6:00.80 in their heat.
The Dragons' women's varsity eight took home the Lela H. Kerr Cup for the second year in a row, winning with a 7:02.29. To advance to the finals, the varsity eight, in the Marlene Buckley II boat, won its heat with a 6:44.40.
While Mrs. Kerr could not be in attendance at today's race, she joined both Kerr Cup winners on Facetime.
The women's varsity pair kicked off the day winning the gold medal with a time of 8:26.16 in the MacDonald boat, outlasting Rutgers-Camden's 8:35.55.
Starting off the afternoon finals, the women's second varsity eight cruised to a gold medal with a 7:02.54, beating Lehigh's 7:09.66.
Drexel's men's second varsity eight also took home the gold, pacing the competition with a 6:12.43. In the Lois Krall boat, the A advanced with a 6:12.22, first in its heat. Drexel B advanced to the final with a 6:27.61 in the Annette Pennoni but was scratched ahead of the race.
The Dragons' men's freshmen four grabbed a gold medal with a 6:55.23, beating second-place Loyola's 7:07.08. The men's freshmen four in the Oxholm boat advanced to the final winning its heat with a 7:00.98, blowing away the competition by more than 16 seconds.
Drexel's freshmen eight A took home the gold medal, winning with a 6:09.30. Drexel's B took second with a 6:23.17, outlasting Lehigh's 6:26.23. The men's freshmen eight A won its heat with a 6:08.26 to advance to the final in the Joseph Greipp boat. The B won its heat as well with a 6:14.58 in the Vince Vidas boat.
The Dragons' men's varsity four won the gold medal in a tight final with a time of 7:01.56. N.Y. Maritime A was charging, but Drexel held off their 7:06.72 time. Colgate came in third with a 7:08.91. In the LeBow College of Business boat, A won its heat with a 6:45.97. The B finished third in its heat with a 7:21.64 in the Oxholm boat.
Drexel's women's freshmen four took home a second place finish in the final, rowing to an 8:08.18 time. Temple's boat won with a 7:58.31. Drexel advanced to the final with a heat winning time of 8:00.48 in the Dawn Byers boat, pacing the competition by more than 18 seconds.
The Dragons' women's freshmen eight grabbed a second place finish. Its 7:16.15 was second behind Temple's 6:57.35. In the Marlene Buckley boat, the women's freshmen eight advanced to the final, finishing first in its heat with a 7:14.94.
Drexel men's pairs finish third (A) and fourth (B) in final with 7:30.43 and 7:40.78, respectively. Lafayette A won with a 7:20.47. The Dragons advanced two of their three men's pairs to the final. The A won its heat with a 7:27.28 and the B won its heat with a 7:27.18 to win its heat as well. The C rowed to a 7:45.03, which fell short of the final.
Drexel's women's varsity four captured a third place finish, posting a time of 8:09.40. Lafayette won the gold with a 7:54.86. The Dragons' women's varsity four A, in the Sandra Lee Sheller, advanced to the final after winning its heat with a time of 7:52.99. Drexel's B, in the Dawn Byers boat, did not advance.
The Kerr Cup was established by Drexel University Alumni in 1967 to honor former Drexel Crew coach, Dr. Thomas Kerr. Dr. Kerr passed away in 1988 at the age of 78. Dr. Kerr is credited with starting Drexel's varsity crew program in 1957, serving as head coach until 1968. He was also the team's physician and surgeon. Dr. Kerr competed in the 1932 Olympics in the four-oar boat and was a member of the national champion eight-oared Shell-Penn A.C. boat in 1931.
The winners of the men's varsity eight race will be awarded the Kerr Cup. The winners of the women's varsity eight race will be awarded the Lela H. Kerr Cup named in honor of Dr. Kerr's wife.
Drexel Crew will return to action on Saturday, April 25 at the Bergen and Kelly Cups on the Schuylkill River.
