Men's Crew Finishes 15th Overall at the IRA National Championships

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Drexel Crew finished 15th overall in its 2014-15 season finale Sunday at IRA National Championships on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., as the freshmen eight took the Dragons' highest finish in sixth place.
Rounding out the Dragons' boats at IRAs was the varsity eight (20th), second varsity eight (19th), varsity four (16th) and third varsity eight (17th). The University of Washington won the title for a record fifth-straight time.
Coming off of a Dad Vail gold medal, the freshmen eight finished sixth overall with a time of 6:04.010 as the only Drexel boat to advance to a grand final. The boat raced to a second-place 5:59.565 time in Saturday's reps in the Joseph Greipp boat. The Dragons finished fourth in heats Friday with a 6:20.889 to move into reps.
Drexel's varsity eight finished second in Sunday's fourth final with a 5:47.671 to finish 20th overall, just 2.5 seconds behind fourth final winner Syracuse. The Dragons finished fourth in the semis with a time of 5:47.606, less than two seconds behind Stanford. The varsity eight kicked off the Blue and Gold's weekend at IRAs in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat with a fifth-place time in its heat of 6:00.108, less than five one-hundredths of a second behind fourth-place Dartmouth. In afternoon reps, the Dragons came in fourth with a 6:02.181 to move into the fourth semifinal.
The second varsity eight finished 19 th overall, cruising to victory in the fourth final with a 5:53.047 in its first competition after winning gold at the Dad Vail Regatta. The boat's time was faster than all but one boat in the third final and two boats in the petite final. In a competitive semifinal, the Dragons were fourth with no time taken. In the Lois Krall boat, the JV eight rowed to a fourth-place 6:09.634 to move into the after reps. In reps, the Dragons came in third with a 6:19.993.
The varsity four concluded its season with a 16th overall finish, coming in fourth in the third final with a 6:40.521. In the LeBow College of Business boat, it finished second in its semifinal with a 6:40.538 in a tight race with all four boats within four seconds of each other. The Dragons will race in Sunday's third final at 8:24 a.m. in lane two. In heats Friday, the Dragons finished second to Cornell with a 6:56.439 to move into reps. In reps, Drexel grabbed third with a 7:01.647.
Finally, the Dragons' third varsity eight, a boat that does not often race together, finished 17 th overall with a fifth-place time of 6:06.237 in the third final. The boat raced into Sunday's third final at 9:36 a.m. in the Annette Pennoni boat. Drexel to a fifth-place 6:34.705 in heats, then another fifth-place finish, this time at 6:35.030, to move into the third final.
Two weeks ago, Drexel's women finished their year with a program-best second-place finish at the CAA Championships.
