FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Drexel women's soccer team defeated Stony Brook, 2-1 on Sunday to wrap up a 2-0 weekend at the Fairfield Invitational. Freshman Shaelyn McCarty and sophomore Imani Walker scored a goal each, with Walker's proving to be the game-winner for Drexel.
The Dragons got on the board first in the 38th minute as McCarty found a loose ball at the top of the box and fired it past the Seawolves' keeper. Drexel's first goal of the game marked the rookie's second of the season.
Drexel added to its lead just before halftime as Walker dribbled the ball down the left side and sunk it into the net from inside the box. The Dragons would finish the first half leading the Seawolves, 2-0.
Stony Brook came out firing a little more than 10 minutes into the second half as the Seawolves got off three shots in less than 10 seconds, but to no avail. Then, in the 66th minute Stony Brook's Christen Cahill found the net on an assist from Raven Edwards to cut the Seawolves' deficit to 2-1. Despite a few strong attempts from Stony Brook in the remainder of regulation, they were unable to catch up to the Dragons.
Despite the loss, Stony Brook outshot Drexel, 21-11. Drexel keeper Eve Badana made four stops in the victory, while the Seawolves' Emily Doherty tallied two saves.
With the win, the Dragons improve to 3-1 on the season, while Stony Brook moves to 0-4. Drexel finished the weekend in second place in the tournament by a goal differential as McCarty, Vanessa Kara, and Madison Dunn all earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Drexel returns to action on Friday, Sept. 4 as they travel to face George Washington at 3 p.m.
