WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Drexel women's soccer team defeated George Washington, 1-0, on the road on Friday afternoon. Freshman Vanessa Kara scored what would become the game-winner for the Dragons.
The Dragons and Colonials came out with a strong defensive first half. George Washington was able to get off three shots in the first 45 minutes, all of which were knocked down by Drexel keeper Eve Badana. The Dragons were able to get two shots off in the same time, but to no avail. The game remained scoreless as the two teams headed to the locker room for halftime.
The Dragons came out strong in the second half as Jacki Sieder took the ball up to the right side of the box and then found Kara who then dribbled it to the left before sinking it into the net in the 51st minute to give Drexel a 1-0 advantage. The Colonials tried to retaliate seven minutes later as Mackenzie Cowley made a strong attempt, but the ball found the crossbar.
In a final effort, George Washington got off two more shots on goal in the 80th and 87th minute, but both were brought down by Badana. The Dragons would hold onto their 1-0 lead to secure their fourth win of the season.
George Washington outshot Drexel, 8-3 in the losing effort. Badana made five stops on the way to her second shutout of the season, while the Colonials' Miranda Horn recorded one save.
With the win, the Dragons improve to 4-1, while the Colonials move to 2-2.
Drexel returns to action on Sunday as they travel to face Rutgers in a game that is slated to start at 1 p.m.
