EVANSTON, Ill. – The Drexel field hockey team (1-5) captured its first win of the season over Central Michigan (0-6) on Sunday afternoon by a final of 5-1 in a neutral site matchup on Northwestern University's campus in Evanston, Ill. Senior Danielle Grassi notched two goals for the Dragons in the win.
After a scoreless first half, the Dragons scored early in the second to take the first lead of the game. Grassi was assisted by freshman Megan Wiest about four minutes into the second half. Wiest made the cross to Grassi in the circle for the score.
Less than two minutes later, Wiest scored a goal of her own, the first of her career. Junior Jessica McCarthy recorded the assist on the play as Wiest put in the reverse shot from close to the top of the circle to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead.
McCarthy added the third goal for Drexel at 56:21 as she beat the Central Michigan goalie from the right side.
Senior Lauren Hibshman gave the Dragons a four-goal advantage when she then scored on a penalty corner.
After Central Michigan responded with one goal late in the half, Grassi notched her second goal of the game with under two minutes left in the contest to more than secure the Dragons' first victory of the campaign. Senior Mary Lynam notched an assist on Drexel's fifth goal.
Drexel outshot CMU, 21-4, including a 10-1 advantage in shots on goals. The Dragons also owned penalty corners, 7-1.
Grassi led the squad with four points on the day while Wiest and McCarthy both had three.
Freshman goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist earned her first start for Drexel in the cage as well as her first collegiate victory on Sunday.
The Dragons are next in action when the squad hosts Fairfield at Buckley Field on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
