PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (1-6) dropped a close nonconference matchup to the Fairfield Stags (2-3) by a final of 2-1 on Friday night at Buckley Field.
A physical game from the start, the Dragons kept its offensive pressure up, ushering in nine shots in the first half to go along with an additional eight in the final 35 minutes. Led by senior midfielder Mary Lynam with five and junior forward Idrienne Walker with four, the 17 shots came as the second-highest total through seven games for Drexel.
The Stags managed to score two goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Fairfield's first goal came off a corner at 26:17 when Emily McCauley inserted a pass to Julie de Paeuw, who knocked it in front the top of the circle. About seven minutes later, the Stags struck again with under two minutes remaining in the first half when Ann Burgoyne scored an unassisted goal on a close range shot in front of the cage after a rebound.
After starting the game in the cage for Drexel, freshman goalkeeper Erin Gilchirst (L, 1-1) was relieved by junior Ainslie Rhoads for the start of the second game. Rhoads played for 30:54 before being removed for the final 4:26 as senior back Jenna Knouse transitioned to the kicking back to give Drexel a player advantage.
With the goalkeeper pulled from the Dragons' cage, the ball stayed in Fairfield's zone for the final minutes of the game. With 1:26 remaining, sophomore Alison McCardell scored from in front of the cage as a scrum crowded the goal line. The Drexel deficient was cut to one with under a minute and a half remaining. It came as McCardell's first collegiate goal.
Drexel attempted another offensive series but could not tie up the game in the closing seconds as the Dragons fell by the 2-1 final.
Friday's game against the Stags is the squad's only contest of the weekend. The Dragons are back in action on Mon., Sept. 28 at home against Lafayette at 7 p.m.
