PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (2-6) came away with a 3-2 win on Monday night in a close game at Buckley field as the Dragons defeated Lafayette (5-5) behind three freshmen goals.
Drexel freshman Megan Wiest gave the Dragons the early lead roughly 10 minutes into the contest when she connected with fellow classmate Amy Ferguson. Ferguson fed a pass into the circle that Wiest deflected in to give Drexel the 1-0 lead.
With less than four minutes remaining in the opening half, Wiest came up big again, scoring on a penalty corner after the first opportunity at the top of the circle fell apart. Wiest put a rebound back in to give the Dragons a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
The goals came as number two and three on the season for Wiest, a figure which leads the team.
About 10 minutes into the second half, Drexel senior Danielle Grassi was assessed a yellow card, giving the Leopards a player advantage for five minutes. With the edge, Lafayette cut the lead in half as Amanda Magadan deflected a shot made by Ami Turner from the left side of the circle with 24 minutes remaining, 2-1.
Eight minutes later, Drexel earned a penalty corner, one of seven on the evening for the Dragons. Freshman Katie Bagdon inserted the ball for Drexel as seniors Mary Lynam and Lauren Hibshman took shots that were stopped. Sophomore Alison McCardell scooped up the rebound and dished it over to Bagdon, who put it on the left side of the cage from the goal line, 3-1. It came as the first collegiate goal for Bagdon.
Lafayette responded with another goal with 4:35 to play in regulation after a long pass brought Drexel goalkeeper Ainslie Rhoads (W, 1-5) out of the cage. Kate Birle scored on a shot from the top left side of the circle, 3-2.
Drexel was able to control possession in the closing minutes to limit any potential Leopard scoring opportunities to hold on for the squad's second win of the season.
Drexel led Lafayette in shots (15 to 12), shots on goal (5 to 4) and penalty corners (7 to 6).
Rhoads made five saves in the cage for Drexel, earning her first win of the season and of her collegiate career.
The Dragons now get set for the opening of conference play at Northeastern on Fri., Oct. 2 at 5 p.m. before returning to Philadelphia to host Rider in a nonconference matchup on Sun., Oct. 4 at noon.
