Field Hockey Wins Conference Opener Over Northeastern, 4-3

DEDHAM, Mass. – The Drexel field hockey team (3-6, 1-0 CAA) earned a 4-3 victory over the Northeastern Huskies (3-8, 0-1 CAA) on Friday evening in Dedham, Mass. in the squad's CAA opener. Junior Jessica McCarthy notched two goals en route to the Dragon win.
McCarthy started the scoring 20 seconds into the Friday affair to give Drexel the early 1-0 lead.
Northeastern tied it up with about 20 minutes remaining in the first half as Natalie Stewart scored her fifth of the season for the Huskies.
In the early goings of the second half, Drexel junior Idrienne Walker scored her third of the season to give the Dragons the lead back at 2-1 with roughly 33 minutes remaining in the contest. Walker stole the ball from a Huskie defender right in front of the cage for the goal.
McCarthy stretched the Drexel lead to 3-1 with 20 minutes left in the game, her third of the season and second of the game, as she was assisted by freshman Katie Pappas. Pappas made a pass to McCarthy from the right side and McCarthy put it away right at the goal line for the two-goal lead.
Northeastern got back within one about eight minutes later when the Huskies connected for a corner with 11:45 remaining, 3-2.
17 second later, the Dragons earned a penalty stroke that senior Lauren Hibshman converted for her second goal of the season, 4-2.
With five minutes left in regulation, the Huskies scored one last goal, their second of the game off a penalty corner as Drexel still led, 4-3, which was the eventual final.
Both teams took 14 shots. A total of nine were on goal for the Dragons compared to the 10 for Northeastern. The Huskies also led corners, 7-2.
McCarthy, Walker and freshman Megan Wiest are now all tied for the team lead in goals with three each.
Freshman Erin Gilchrist (W, 2-1) earned her second win the cage as she came on as a reserve and played the second half, finishing with five saves. She entered the game to start to the second half, tied at 1-1, after junior Ainslie Rhoads started and played the first 35 minutes. Rhoads finished with two saves on the day.
The Dragons now turn their attention to Rider on Sun., Oct. 4 in a nonconference matchup at home in Philadelphia. Action begins at noon from Buckley Field. Live stats and live video will be available. Admission to the field is free.
