Field Hockey Wins Third Straight, Defeats Rider, 4-2

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (4-6) earned a 4-2 win over the Rider Broncs (7-4) in a nonconference matchup on Sunday afternoon from Buckley Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The win came as Drexel's third straight after defeating Lafayette last Sunday and Northeastern in the CAA opener on Friday.
Dragon freshman Megan Wiest scored her fourth goal of the season 8:15 into the contest. Junior Idrienne Walker took a shot that was blocked by a Rider defender, but Wiest scooped up the rebound in front of the cage and flipped it past the Bronc goalkeeper for the score, 1-0.
Junior Jessica McCarthy added a goal for Drexel 10 minutes later. After the Dragons earned a penalty corner, one of four on the day for the squad, senior Mary Lynam settled the insert and passed to McCarthy. McCarthy took a shot from the left side for her fourth goal of the campaign to make it 2-0.
Rider got a goal back two minutes later when Bronc freshman Christine van Egmond made a long pass from outside the circle to junior Kalyn O'Brien to get back within one, 2-1.
At the half, with the score 2-1 in favor of Drexel, the Dragons led shots, 10-6, and corners, 3-1.
Junior Ainsline Rhoads (W, 2-5) earned the start and the win in the cage for Drexel but was relieved in the second half by freshman Erin Gilchrist.
Less than two minutes into the half, Walker notched a goal of her own, also the fourth of her season. Senior Danielle Grassi set Walker up as Grassi made a pass from the far side of the field. Walker got her stick on it to slip it by the Rider goalkeeper, 3-1.
Walker added her second of the game and team-leading fifth of the season less than four minutes later as freshman Amy Ferguson was credited with the assist, 4-1.
Rider scored one final goal with around 15 minutes remaining in the contest as junior Carlie Spaeder took a shot from just inside the right side of the circle, 4-2.
Walker led the team with a game-high nine shots; McCarthy added four while Wiest recorded two.
Drexel sophomore Alison McCardell made a defensive save in the first half, her third of the season.
Drexel is now 2-2 at Buckley Field in 2015.
The Dragons now travel to No. 19 James Madison in the squad's second CAA game of the year on Fri., Oct. 9 at 6 p.m.
