Field Hockey Drops CAA Matchup with No. 18 James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Drexel field hockey team (4-7, 1-1 CAA) fell to the No. 18 James Madison Dukes (9-3, 3-0 CAA) by a final of 4-0 at the JMU Field Hockey Complex in Harrisonburg, Va. on Friday night.
The evening was plagued by a two-hour weather delay due to lightning after the two squads played a little over seven minutes of the affair.
JMU scored two goals in the first half after the delay, giving the Dukes a 2-0 lead going into halftime. Melissa Wilken scored the first goal for JMU about seven minutes after the game got back underway after the delay, which lasted from 6:09 p.m. to 8:09 p.m.. Taylor West then scored her ninth of the season on a penalty stroke with less than eight minutes left in the opening half.
Wilken added a second goal in the second half for James Madison on an assist by West. The goal gave the Dukes a 3-0 lead about six minutes into the half.
JMU added a fourth and final goal with less than six minutes left in the contest off the stick of Kim Hitchcock.
Drexel registered nine total shots including seven in the first half. The Dragons led corners, 4-3, all seven corners came in the opening period.
Junior Idrienne Walker led Drexel with three shots, all on goal. Fellow junior Jessica McCarthy had two shots.
Junior goalkeeper Ainslie Rhoads earned the start and made four saves. Freshman Erin Gilchrist played the entire second half and made two saves.
The Dragons will now face the No. 2 Connecticut Huskies in the squad's Play 4 The Cure game on Sunday at 1 p.m. from Buckley Field. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness.
