Field Hockey Falls at Home to No. 2 UConn, 6-0

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (4-8) dropped its Sunday contest at home to No. 2 Connecticut (13-0) by a final score of 6-0. Sunday's game was the team's Play4TheCure game. Drexel also welcomed back its field hockey alumni on the warm fall afternoon.
The Dragons came out aggressive early, getting a quick penalty corner and a couple shots on its No. 2 ranked opponent.
Connecticut's Charlotte Veitner, the nation's leading scorer, notched the first goal of the game for the Huskies 6:34 into the affair. With around 14 minutes left in the half, UConn scored on a set penalty corner piece to take a 2-0 lead. The Huskies added a third goal in the first half off the stick of Pippa Lewis after she scored on a rebound.
Connecticut added three more goals in the second half. Casey Umstead deflected a shot by Roisin Upton to make it 4-0 about 11 minutes into the final half. Five minutes later Amanda Collins recorded an unassisted goal after she put it in after a blocked shot in front of the cage. Veitner capped off the Huskies' six-goal game with her second of the day on a diving shot from close range with less than five minutes to play. The second goal came as Veitner's 28th on the campaign.
Drexel junior goalkeeper Ainslie Rhoads (L, 2-7) started in the cage, but was relieved after 23:47 minutes of play. Freshman Erin Gilchrist replaced Rhoads for the final 46:13. Gilchrist made seven saves on the afternoon in relief.
Junior Jessica McCarthy led the Dragons with three shots, all on goal. Senior Mary Lynam also notched two of Drexel's eight total shots.
Drexel also led penalty corners, 6-4.
The Dragons will now face William & Mary in a CAA matchup next Fri., Oct. 16 at home at 6 p.m. before hosting Temple at 2:30 p.m. on Sun., Oct. 18. The team is in the midst of a four-game homestand at Buckley Field.
