PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (5-8, 2-1 CAA) earned a conference win on Friday night on a late goal scored by freshman Lindsay Boerner to defeat the William & Mary Tribe (5-9, 1-3 CAA) by a 1-0 margin.
The first half saw aggression from both sides, defensively and offensively. Drexel lead shots 8-6 in the opening 35 minutes and each team had its scoring threats. A total of three green cards were issued in the first half.
The second half started much of the same way. The deciding goal came late in the period.
With around 14 minutes remaining, Drexel freshman Megan Wiest took a close-range backhand that deflected off of the William & Mary goalkeeper. The ball sailed into the air before fellow classmate Lindsay Boerner controlled the rebound for the score. The goal came as the first collegiate goal for Boerner, who has seen time in eight games on the season.
Drexel kept the offensive pressure up after the goal to maintain the ball and pace of the game. The Tribe got a few offensive chances late but could not mount the comeback as the Dragons held on for the 1-0 conference victory.
Drexel freshman goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist (W, 3-1) earned the start in the cage for the Dragons as well as her first collegiate shutout, making seven saves. The shutout also came as the team's first since the last game of the 2014 campaign.
Wiest and junior Jessica McCarthy led the squad with four shots each against William & Mary. Junior Alexandra Pickens had three shots on the night. Drexel led total shots, 16-12, including shots on goal by a 9-7 margin.
The Dragons will now turn their attention to local Philadelphia rival, the Temple Owls, in a nonconference game on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2:30 p.m. at Buckley Field. Live stats and video will be available for the Sunday afternoon contest.
