9/13/2015 3:18:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team defeated Niagara by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. Vanessa Kara and Imani Walker contributed a goal each in the Dragons' winning effort.
Kara's goal marked the quickest scoring effort in program history, as it came just 16 seconds after the start of the game. The rookie was able to intercept a pass off of the opening tap, break through Niagara's defense and put the ball into the right side of the net to give Drexel an early lead. Kara leads the Dragons with four goals on the season.
Drexel was able to extend its lead in the 41st minute as Keunna Dill found Walker coming up the middle near the top of the box. Walker drilled the ball past the Purple Eagles' keeper from straight on to give Drexel a 2-0 advantage. The Dragons would take this lead into halftime.
As the second half progressed, Niagara was able to get on the board in the 71st minute when Haillie Price found the rebound off of her own shot and put it past Drexel keeper Kelsie Fye, who had entered the game two minutes earlier in relief of Eve Badana. After making it a 2-1 game with a chunk of time left to play, Niagara had a few opportunities to even the score. The Drexel defense was able to hold them off, however, and they were ultimately unsuccessful.
With the win, the Dragons improve to 6-2 on the season which marks their best start since 2012. Niagara now holds a 2-3-2 record. Despite the loss, the Purple Eagles narrowly outshot the Dragons, 13-12. Badana and Fye combined for three saves on the game, while Niagara's Feiertag tallied six stops on the contest.
The Dragons return to action on Thursday, Sept. 17 when they will travel to upstate New York to take on Syracuse. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
