RUMSON, N.J. – After the fog cleared and racing could finally begin, Drexel Crew opened its fall season Saturday morning at the Rumson Boat Race on the Navesink River, continuing its dominance at the annual fall opener.
The Dragons took home wins in all four races they were entered in, making them undefeated at Rumson over the past two seasons.
Drexel's women's varsity eight, in the Maria Papadakis boat, took first place ahead of Villanova and Army. In the Marlene Buckley boat, the second varsity eight also clocked a first-place time.
Success continued onto the men's side as well. The men's varsity eight, racing in the Annette Pennoni boat, bested crews from Rutgers, Army and Villanova on the morning. In the Joseph Greipp boat, the Dragons' second varsity eight took first in a tight race against Army.
The Rumson Boat Race is organized by Dan Edwards, who coached at Drexel and helped establish the women's rowing program nearly 30 years ago in 1986. His daughter, Kate, is a sophomore for Drexel Crew and was a spare rower for the event.
Drexel will have next weekend off from competition with the Pope in town. The Dragons will return to competition on Oct. 4 at the Bucknell Invitational.
