PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (0-3) fell to the Saint Joseph's Hawks (2-1) on a late goal on Friday afternoon at Ellen Ryan Field on SJU's campus.
Play was back and forth in the first half. Drexel got an early chance after a shot by junior Jessica McCarthy that was saved by the SJU goalkeeper about three minutes into the Friday affair. The Dragons got another chance seconds later on a penalty corner but could not covert the scoring opportunity.
Saint Joseph's led shots in the first half 4-2, including a penalty corner opportunity that was saved by junior Ainslie Rhoads in the Drexel cage with no time on the clock to end the first half. Rhoads totaled two saves in the opening 35 minutes.
Late in the second half with about 10 minutes remaining in play, junior Idrienne Walker snuck past the Hawk defense. The ball drifted from her stick as the SJU goalkeeper came out to defend. Freshman Alexandra Pickens picked it up and then took a close range shot that was saved on a diving stop.
Minutes later, Saint Joseph's struck first with 7:17 to play in regulation. The Hawks drew a penalty corner and Rhoads saved the initial attempt. SJU's Emily Nonnemacher scored on a rebound deflected through the air to give the Hawks the late 1-0 lead.
Rhoads kept Drexel in the game as she made another diving stop minutes later. She finished the game with four saves.
The Dragons called a timeout with 2:39 remaining in the game, trailing 1-0. Senior back Jenna Knouse returned after the timeout for Drexel as the kicking back, giving the Dragons an extra field player for the final minutes in the game.
Drexel could not mount a comeback and fell to the Hawks, 1-0.
The Dragons are next in action against the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels at Buckley Field in the 2015 home opener on Sunday, September 6 at 1 p.m. Admission is free. Live video and stats will also be available for the Sunday afternoon affair.
