PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (0-4) kept the game close against No. 2 North Carolina (4-0) on Sunday afternoon in the Dragons' 2015 home opener at Buckley Field, but fell by the eventual 3-0.
The Tar Heels recorded two goals in the first half. UNC's Emily Wold tallied the first, about eight minutes into the contest after she put a rebound back in the top of the cage to give the Tar Heels the early 1-0 lead. Fifteen minutes into the half, Casey Di Nardo connected with Malin Evert on a pass through the circle that led to a close range shot and goal for Evert.
After 35 minutes, Drexel trailed North Carolina, 2-0.
In the second half, the Dragons received back-to-back corner opportunities about midway through, but could not convert the scoring opportunities.
UNC added a third and final goal with roughly 11 minutes remaining in the game. Gab Major scored from point-blank range during a scrum in front of the cage.
Drexel's Alison McCardell came up big for the Dragons late in the game with a defensive save. UNC's Di Nardo, who totaled a game-high nine total shots on Sunday, put up a high shot that McCardell stopped with her stick in the middle of the cage to prevent a four-goal lead for the Tar Heels.
The strong defensive effort kept Drexel in most of the game against the No. 2-ranked opponent. UNC outshot Drexel, 26-2, yet only managed to score three times. Junior Ainslie Rhoads stopped five shots in the first half and freshman Erin Gilchrist saved another nine in the second half for Drexel.
The Dragons now gear up for a road trip to Evanston, Ill. to take on No. 10 Northwestern and Central Michigan next Friday, Sept. 11 and Sunday, Sept. 13. Northwestern will be Drexel's third top-ten opponent on the season thus far.
