PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's soccer team opened a three-game homestand on Saturday with a 2-0 loss to Elon. The Dragons were outshot 12-6 overall as they could not come up with their first Colonial Athletic Association win of the year.
Drexel was able to hold the high-powered Elon offense off the board in the first half, as neither team got any particularly strong pressure offensively. The Dragons did have a late flurry in the first half, putting up four shots in just over five minutes. Three of those came off the toe of Armin Efendic, but the Phoenix was able to get a body in between Efendic and the goal and block every Drexel shot away.
The Phoenix did not waste much time after intermission getting on the board. Elon scored in the 48th minute on a hard-luck play for the Dragons. Tuki Tayali rocketed a shot off the post to the right of Drexel goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach. The ball ricocheted directly to his teammate Jaiden Fortune, who deposited it in the back of the net. Five minutes later, Ilai Shvika put a shot on goal, but Elon's Matthew Jegier made the save, the only one he was called upon to make all afternoon.
Elon added a second goal in the 73rd minute when Elijah Agu scored off a feed from Nick Adamczyk. Adamczyk brought it upfield on a fast break, bringing it into the right side of the box and drawing the defense before he fed it to Agu for a head-on goal.
The Dragons will continue their homestand next week when they host James Madison on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. That will be the final home CAA game of the season for Drexel, which will host UMBC on Oct. 25 before heading on the road for its final two games of the year.
