Field Hockey Falters Against No. 6 Northwestern

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (6-6) suffered a nonconference loss to the No. 6 Northwestern Wildcats by a final of 7-2 on Sunday afternoon from Buckley Field to close out the weekend.
The Dragons scored two late goals in the affair but could not withstand the early Wildcat offensive onsalught which saw Northwestern senior Isabel Flens score a hat trick in the first nine minutes of play.
Flens scored the opening goal 2:50 into the contest on Sunday as she settled a rebound to make it 1-0. Less than two minutes later, the senior scored again as she took it through the left side of the circle. Just under nine minutes into the game, she completed the early hat trick as junior Sophia Miller assisted with a pass from the top of the circle.
The Wildcats added a fourth first-half goal with 1:27 left in the opening period. Freshman Saar de Breji deflected a pass through the circle off the stick of sophomore Puck Pentenga. Pentenga was credited with an assist on the play as the Wildcats held the four-goal lead going into halftime.
Junior Pascale Massey, de Breji and redshirt sophomore Katie Yeatts recorded the three second-half goals for the Wildcats.
Drexel seniors Jessica McCarthy and Idrienne Walker scored the two late goals for the Dragons.
McCarthy tallied her fifth of the year on a penalty stroke with 1:49 left in regulation. The senior captain now has five goals to go along with a team-best six assists for 16 points on the campaign.
Walker added her sixth of the season with 24 seconds left as freshman Tess Bernheimer notched her third career assist on the play.
Northwestern led corners, 6-0, and shots, 19-7.
Drexel goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist played the first 44:18 before being relieved by redshirt sophomore Kathryn Boyce, who made her first appearance of the year in the cage. Gilchrist allowed five goals and made two saves. Boyce stopped two and gave up two.
The Dragons return to action at Buckley Field next Sunday, October 9 for a 2 p.m. start against No. 19 James Madison in a CAA matchup.
